More than 20 organizations from northern and central Belize have completed a five-month course on energy efficiency hosted by the LAIT UP BELIZE PROJECT. From May to September, private sector companies, educational institutions, and Belize Electricity Limited participated in the Energy Efficiency Learning Network (EELN) program. The workshops contained theory and practical sessions aimed at helping participants understand their energy consumption needs, and what they can do to be more efficient. Jose Luis Larregola, the project facilitator and an energy expert from the European Union, said that the initiative was the first of its kind for the private sector.
Lisa Stanford, Marketing and Sales Manager at BEL, says that participating in the project helped to connect BEL with its customers and get an understanding of how they consume energy. Stanford says that the workshops complement an ongoing program by BEL to raise awareness about energy efficiency.
Sessions for the EELN workshops were held at the University of Belize’s Belmopan Campus for the central organizations, and the Orange Walk ITVET for those in the north. Participants received a certificate of completion today at the closing ceremony held at the Biltmore Plaza.
