Up to last night Boledo buyers were in luck as the State of Emergency regulations had only required that the Boledo and lottery draws be done earlier than usual. This morning that changed and all games of chance were suspended for the next 30 days. Since the change in this part of the regulations, Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte says he has been bombarded with calls and texts asking him to undo this change.
Hon. Michael Peyrefitte, Minister of National Security: “We simply draft the document upon the instructions of the Oversight Committee and the Task Force and the National Security apparatus will be responsible for enforcing it. So when somebody is not on the essential list calling me would be wasting your time, I can’t help you. The people I just mentioned don’t praise them for what’s in the document, please don’t crucify them for what’s in the document because we don’t control what is in the document. If you want to control what is in the document. If you want to be essential you contact the Prime Minister the Right Honorable Dean Barrow who is the co-chairman, the Honorable John Briceno who is the Leader of the Opposition, the Honorable Pablo Marin who is the Minister of Health, Catherine Meighan from the Chamber of Commerce, Andre Carrillo from the Belize Network of NGOs, Ingrid Sansores from the National Trade Union Congress of Belize and Reverend Andella Moore from the Council of Churches. The rapporteurs for that Oversight Committee are; Ms.Audrey Wallace the CEO in the Office of the Prime Minister, Ambassador Stuart Leslie Chief of Staff for the Leader of the Opposition and then you have the Task Force co chaired by CEO Judith Alpuche. Those people are the people who determine what goes into this document. So when you want to have an influence on this document myself and the people who I mentioned before we can’t help you. We don’t determine the policy when it comes to this, the Attorney General’s Ministry prepares the document, National Security enforces the document. I just wanted to make that very clear so it’s not Michael Peyrefitte that said or Chester Williams that said “No more Boledo.” that is something that came from the Oversight Committee, they instructed to say “Listen, we thought about it. We’ve assessed the situation and we believe that Boledo should be discontinued since we’re already discontinuing other gaming operations.”. That was not a Michael Peyerfitte decision, that was not a Chester Williams decision, that was an Oversight Committee decision. I think I need to make that very clear so stop blowing up my phone if your organization is not on the essential services list, I don’t control that.”
With all the hustle and bustle over COVID-19, it didn’t make the top stories but we did find out that Brad’s Gaming Company did get a 3-month extension on their gaming license from the Government of Belize for the Boledo draw. Brad’s contract had expired and a tender was put out for other interested parties to apply.
