A team of talented young ladies from Pallotti High School returned to the country today as gold medalist after securing Belize a championship in the 2023 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Challenge. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology officially welcomed Pallotti High School students and the rest of their delegation today following their gold in Panama. The team, PHS ROTECH, consists of Irian Jones, Amber Wright, Osvani Magana, and Alair Mari, and was led by former teacher Abraham Flowers. The finals were held yesterday in Panama City, Panama, with the participation of over nine thousand students from 109 schools. The Rotech team entered the competition with its, “SMARTZ” blind stick, a two-part device that alerts visually impaired persons about obstacles in their surroundings, to keep them from sustaining injuries. The competition encourages students to tackle emerging challenges and produce tangible innovative solutions to social issues. Pallotti High School’s acting Vice Principal spoke to Love News about how the team prepared for the competition as well as the school’s intent to involve robotics in their curriculum.
Rushawn Reynolds, Acting Vice President, Pallotti: “The girls they came up with their names all by themselves and they called themselves ROTECH and this was actually an afterschool program where the students would have to find time in their busy schedules to dedicate to this robotics club and so they would have to come sometimes during the week in the evening time and also on Saturdays. So within the new curriculum that we are implementing the competency based framework it has an area already imbedded in there for science and technology so that more students will have the opportunity to venture into robotics and yes the club continues and I’m sure after this major win more students will be interested in joining this club.”
Love news is aware that the grand prize is not shared with the public due to safety reasons. We were informed; however, that the ladies received vouchers to acquire Samsung products.
