Justice Franz Parke was sworn in as a judge of the Belize Court of Appeal on October 16, and today, he tendered his resignation. There was major controversy when Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced that Parke would be named a justice of the Court of Appeal. The major opposition party, People’s United Party filed a lawsuit as they claimed that Parke did not meet the requirements for the position. The opposition also came from the Bar Association, the BNTU and members of civil society. A release from the office of the Prime Minister says Justice Parke made the decision which is effective immediately, in order to spare the Court any exposure that a trial on his tenure would create.
