The lobbying for the Equal Opportunities Bill (EOB) continues following countrywide consultations held earlier this year. The Bill is still receiving opposition from various groups including the Churches. Appearing on the BCCI segment of The Morning Show today were Attorney/Consultant Richard Brathwaite and CEO Judith Alpuche. According to Alpuche, they are aware of the various forms of discrimination that takes place which is why they chose to address them via this Bill.
Judith Alpuche, CEO, Ministry of Human Development: “We know the cases of people facing discrimination because they have these characteristics and so it is an attempt to bring everything together and to look at how do you have a very progressive bill in terms of ensuring the rights of everyone as guranteed by the constitution.”
According to Dyon Elliott of the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry, one of the concerns expressed was that the draft is not as explicit and leaves room for multiple translations.
The EOB reportedly serves to protect citizens from discrimination of race, religion, gender, sexuality among others.
