Parties Gear Up for Municipal Elections 2018

Municipal elections for the nine towns and cities in the country were held on March 4, 2015 with the United Democratic Party claiming victory at eight of the nine local governments.  In about three hundred days, another round of elections at the municipal level will take place.  The two main political parties are already seeking candidates to fill the post of Mayoral and Councillor Candidates.  The Dangriga Branch of the People’s United Party recently placed a call for aspiring candidates.  The San Pedro Branch of the PUP has also begun their search for candidates and so has their San Ignacio/Santa Elena branch.  In the Belmopan division, Area Representative, John Saldivar has also placed a social media post directing applications to their committee.  As a third party, the Belize Progressive Party has also sent out their appeal for applicants.  In the cities of Belize and Belmopan there are seats for eleven Councillors and one mayor while the other seven municipalities require six councillors and a mayor.  In the 2015 election, the UDP and the PUP had slates in each town and city while the Belize Progressive Party placed slates in San Pedro, Belmopan and Punta Gorda.  Overall there were eight independent candidates.
