School days are described as the best days of your life and for those students who received scholarships, it should be even sweeter. Over the summer we have been reporting on different organizations which have been lightening parent’s financial burden that accompanies higher education. Pathlight International is the latest organization which has issued scholarships to students. A short ceremony was held this morning at Pathlight’s office in Belize City where 62 scholarships were awarded to qualified students. Pathlight’s director Dion Rodriguez spoke to the media about the criteria students had to meet.

Dion Rodriguez, Director of Pathlight

Dion Rodriguez, Director of Pathlight International: “What we are looking for is students who have a high need and have the drive to want to go to high school. So students apply and then we have a rubric that we have that we look at their standard five report cards, standard six report cards, recommendations from teachers, interview the students and the teachers. In Belize City the challenge for us right now is boys, the boys are very very hard to find in a sense meaning that we have the applications out, our of our hundred and twenty-five applications just for Belize City now only about 20 boys applied.”
Reporter: Jennifer Cassanova, one of that scholarship recipients shared how she received several scholarship offers but chose to accept the scholarship from Pathlight since it was the most comprehensive.

Jennifer Cassanova, Scholarship Recipient

Jennifer Cassanova, Scholarship recipient: “At school, they told me the news that I got accepted and I was very excited. I have a brother that attends Pathlight that’s going to third form here and the past years that he attended Pathlight I saw him develop more in his education and I thought Pathlight was a good reason so I accepted it. Pathlight made us draw our future goals and my future goal is to be an entrepreneur.”
Reporter: Rodriguez noted that Pathlight has been able to act as a catalyst by changing the culture in communities where females were not given the privilege to attend high school.
