Yesterday, UDP Collett Area Representative Patrick Faber said in the House of Representatives that a woman was raped in front of his office last week on Antelope Street. Faber said that while his cameras caught the incident, he denied sharing it with the 60-year-old victim’s family amid fears of being judged for “snitching”. The statement led many to question whether Faber acted in the victim’s best interest and if the police were aware. Today, the Commissioner of Police Chester Williams weighed in on Faber’s actions and stated that the department will retrieve the footage.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “I was very appalled by the comment of the area representative from Collet. I don’t think that’s something he should be extremely happy about. The issue of fighting crime is everybody’s business and for you to be in the House criticizing the police for not being effective on crime and here you are as an area representative being paid by the people of this country you have information not just of a crime but of a woman being raped and to say that you will not or you did not share the footage with the police I think that it is a sad moment for us and you are basically saying to the nation that you are a contributor to the crime problem because you can’t expect that the police is going to be everywhere and if you want to criticize the police you give the police the information and if they do nothing with it then you can criticize them but for you to have the information that could help the police in solving this crime and you don’t do so you are part of the problem.”
Reporter: Was there anything the police can do to force him to surrender this surveillance footage ?
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Well I know now and I have already given instructions to the investigators to go and request it form him and if he does not provide it section 20 I think of the indictable procedures act gives the police the power to be able to use a search warrant and go and retrieve the footage. So the police will be doing that to make sure that we get the footage with a view to see if we can solve that crime.”
On Monday, 32-year-old Samuel Bernardez was charged with the crime of rape and was remanded to prison.
