PBL Court Case Against CWU is Adjourned

The Christian Workers Union (CWU) provided an update on the court case that was brought against them by the Port of Belize Limited (PBL). The CWU issued a press release today (CWU VO) stating that the court hearing that was scheduled to take place yesterday, September 13, 2022 was pushed back to Friday, November 4, 2022. PBL’s Claim against CWU challenges the legality of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Government of Belize and the CWU. The MOU provides for an ex-gratia payment of BZ$1.5 million to the PBL Stevedores through the CWU as compensation for the injuries they received during a peaceful demonstration that occurred in 2020. The Court granted an interim injunction to stop the further distribution of the funds, pending the determination of the Claim. The CWU says Stevedores who have not received their compensation continue to experience financial distress and difficulty as a result of this Claim and the interim injunction. The release states that the CWU feels that t Claim is a malicious attempt to intimidate and punish Stevedores. But, the CWU says they remain fortified in its position that the injunction will be discharged. CWU remains respectful of the Court but agitates for a fair and expeditious process of determining this matter so that the remaining Stevedores can receive their compensation. The release finished by saying that the CWU will continue to fight for the rights of all its Members, including Stevedores.
