People’s Constitution Commission Holds Public Lectures on Belize Constitution

The People’s Constitution Commission (PCC) recently held two public lectures on the constitution in the north. The first session was held on July 28, 2023, at the Muffles College Auditorium in Orange Walk Town. The second was held on July 29, at the House of Culture in Corozal Town. At the lectures, keynote speaker Edd Peter Usher, focused on the Preamble and Fundamental Rights sections of the Belize Constitution. The PCC said that Orange Walk participants engaged in discussions on fundamental rights they perceive as being violated or in danger of being “lost.” Corozal participants took a special interest in rights relating to education and healthcare. The PCC said that it will continue the lecture series countrywide. The lectures form a part of a larger public education and consultation campaign that the PCC launched in late June. The PCC is tasked with making recommendations for amendments to the Constitution to the Government of Belize.
