The People’s Constitution Commission (PCC) held a special information session on the constitution in Belize City over the weekend, geared specifically towards reaching Belize’s Kriol population. The information session was coordinated by the National Kriol Council, one of the 23 interest groups that make up the PCC. The session was held at Swift Hall in the Lake Independence area. Vice President of the National Kriol Council, Michael Kemp, said that the session is a first in an ongoing effort to sensitize Kriol people to the efforts underway to amend the constitution. Kemp said that turnout for social events is traditionally higher than for information sessions, but the hope is that attendance will increase as more people learn the importance of the process.
The presenter at the session, Edward Usher, explained that he has been traveling the country giving similar presentations. Usher said that goal is to make Belizeans aware of the rights and freedoms already guaranteed to them under the constitution, so they can make informed recommendations for amendments.
The PCC is conducting similar information sessions with other interest groups, in preparation for May 2024 when it hands over recommended amendments for the constitution to the Government of Belize.
