Today is the deadline for the three unions, the BNTU, PSU and the APSSM, to present a counterproposal to government’s proposed three-year ten percent salary cut and the continued freeze of increments. When we reached out to union presidents this evening, we were told that the proposals were being finalized. All three unions have made it known that they are against the salary cut and will take necessary actions against the salary cut. Prime Minister John Briceno and his administration, however, are not backing down and today in his weekly message under the theme “We cannot lose hope”, PM Briceno is appealing to the unions to help.
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “In just a few short months of taking office we have seen major improvements in the national road network giving our farmers and productive sector a clear path to participate in bringing back our weak economy. Tens of thousands of our citizens are still without work, they have paid the ultimate sacrifice in these difficult times so as we prepare our budget I appeal to our unions to help. We all have to help.”
