We also asked the Prime Minister about the volatile situation in Jerusalem. Israeli military forces continue to launch *launched airstrikes against militant targets in the Gaza Strip after rockets were fired from the territory towards Jerusalem. *Tensions between Israel and the Palestinians spiralled in recent days and the Government of Belize has registered its concerns. Prime Minister John Briceno told Love News that Belize unequivocally condemns the violent confrontations and attacks against civilians at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound. Briceno is urging Israel to refrain from advancing its provocative plan to forcibly evict Palestinians from their homes in East Jerusalem, which would be a flagrant violation of international and human rights law.
John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “We have sent out a very strong condemnation of the very strong, almost heartless response of Israel upon the Palestinian people. Israel is so much more powerful, they have a bigger army, they have more weapons, they’re better trained, they have more money and I mean the devastation has been incredible. It is sad, it is painful to see what is going on and we continue to appeal to the government of Israel to cease and desist from the devastation they are putting Palestine through. Now at the same time we also have to ask the citizens of Palestine to hold back because violence against violence does not bring lasting peace. It does not solve the problems. They need to sit down around the table and try to find a way how they can negotiate and come to a peaceful understanding of coexisting between Israel and Palestine.”
Belize reiterates its support for the Palestinian people and their right to establish an independent state based on the 1967 borders.
