PM Briceno Condemns the Killing of Slain Soldier Jessie Escobar

Prime Minister John Briceno says that he outright condemns the killing of twenty-nine-year-old Jesse Escobar. Escobar is the soldier that was fatally shot on Sunday night in front of his wife and two-year-old daughter by another soldier in Santa Familia Village, Cayo. The incident, which was caught on camera, resulted in brief unrest in the village and outraged members of the public. PM Briceno said on Wednesday’s edition of “The Morning Show” on Love Television that in his opinion, there were multiple ways that the incident could have been avoided.

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “I don’t think there is the right words to be able to sympathize with the family and especially the little three year old daughter that saw her father being killed in front of her eyes and before you go into the killing lets not forget that little girl and that we need to find a way how we can get some counseling for her so that she could deal with this or else later on as she becomes an adult it could really have some bad effects on her like what happens to war veterans when they come home and so the same thing can happen to her. But certainly the killing from BDF to BDF was certainly senseless and it should have never happened. Even the police officer that was there pulling out guns on our citizens that is uncalled for and even the BDF Corporal that was there he should have immediately stepped in and diffused the situation but that Corporal did not do that. So there were in multiple ways that they went wrong and certainly as a government and also as a father I condemn what happened on Sunday night and that this shooting should have never happened.”

Escobar was a Belize Defense Force soldier for nine years and was stationed at Price Barracks Base in Ladyville at the time of his untimely death.
