PM Briceno also responded to the criticism that the government is not doing all it can for the CWU while going the extra mile for the BSCFA. Briceno denies the claim and says the government, through the Ministry of Labor, has been working with PBL and the CWU to resolve the current stalemate. Briceno also explained that there were talks to raise shipping tariffs under the previous administration, but his government saw it fit to abandon the move.
Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “We have the Ministry of Labour they have been doing that and they’ve been meeting with both groups in trying to find a way that we can move that forward. Before the change of government the UDP had approved increasing the tariffs but it was not enacted into law. We believe that this is not the time because of the cost of inflation we’re trying to hold down costs so I don’t think we are in a position right now be able to sign onto what the UDP left to increase tariffs.”
