PM Briceno Doesn’t Care for the UDP

During his press conference today, Prime Minister John Briceno responded to some of the statements expressed yesterday by the United Democratic Party. The UDP held a press conference at its headquarters in Belize City where they criticized the PM Briceno’s response to its request for the amount of money that Courtenay Coye LLP has been paid by the government for legal work. Here is how the PM reacted to the comments made by UDP Chairman Michael Peyrefitte.

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “I have better things to do. I was busy running a Cabinet meeting so no I did not listen and I’m not really interested what they have to say. I think he must have gotten vex, he didn’t look like he didn’t get any part of the action. Thirty million dollars is a lot of money and so he must have been shocked to have found out that the people that are connected to the Barrow family one way or the other collected approximately thirty million dollars and that’s what we’ve found out so far. I am convinced that the numbers are correct. I’m discussing right now with finance and others to maybe consider to release even the actual documents to show when each individual payment was made.”

Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs: “Every time I’m appointed to the Senate I write that letter to the Governor General and I get back a response so there was nothing different. Every single time because I don’t know whenever somebody – there are nine lawyers in that firm somebody calls them they get business I don’t know what’s gonna happen so I write that letter to make sure that I’m covered in the event that my firm is asked to do any work. It’s as simple as that, nothing more complicated or secret.”

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “It’s the law that you’re required to do that.”

Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs: “Routine matter. Don’t make Mike get you excited.”

Reporter: The UDP chairman he had said that the letter opens you to a lawsuit because of what he described as defamatory remarks in those letters, what’s your response to that ?

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “They are taking out endless lawsuits against the government so it’s just going to be another one should they decide they want to do that but I’m not sure they want to go down that road.”
