PM Briceno Says it is Unfortunate the Churches Are Calling for a Referendum at this Stage

Prime Minister John Briceno was also asked about the churches’ call for a referendum on the Cannabis and Industrial Hemp Licensing and Control legislation. The National Evangelical Association of Belize (NEAB) has been collecting signatures to trigger a referendum. Their call for a referendum is echoed by the National Teachers Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) and the United Democratic Party (UDP). PM Briceno says it is unfortunate that the churches are calling for a referendum at this stage, especially since extensive consultations were had.

John Briceño, Prime Minister: “It is unfortunate that the churches decided to have a, to want a referendum because they had adequate enough time to tell us that’s what they wanted. We had extensive, extensive consultations with everyone, including the churches, indoor and public and private and now for them now to say that they want to have a referendum, well then we have to respect their views.”
