PM Briceno Says Land Borders Will Re-open in Early 2022

Late last month Prime Minister John Briceno met with members of the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI). Three main topics discussed were numerous ongoing governance reforms and other reforms for the improvement of the business environment, the country’s continued management of the pandemic and the opening of land borders in early 2022. With the new Omicron variant spreading, we asked the Prime Minister, John Briceno, if plans have changed.

John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “The Minister of Immigration brought a paper last week for us to be able to provide more immigration officers at the airport and at the borders. The Ministry of Health yesterday told us that also they’re preparing to ensure that they have enough people at the border to facilitate the fast movement of visitors coming through the land borders. We have to continue to be vigilant. I mean there’s no other way. You have to be able to make sure that you are vaccinated, make sure that you do your test. I mean I saw today on the news in the US now they’re saying that to come to the US you have to have a test within 24 hours. We were saying 72 hour so we may have to be making also those adjustments but we have to speak to both the Minister of Tourism and the Minister of Health for us to able to see whether it’s a decision that we also need to make.”
