Leader of the Opposition, Shyne Barrow, has denounced the decision by the Briceno Administration to implement a visa requirement for Haitian nationals. In a statement this afternoon, Barrow says the government is violating the CARICOM’s free rights of movement guaranteed under the Treaty of Chaguaramas. He went further to cite precedence in a 2013 case when the Caribbean Court of Justice ruled in favor of a CARICOM nation indicating that she had a right to enter any Caricom nation without harassment or undue impediments. Prime Minister John Briceno weighed in on the issue, but not before bringing the opposition leader under ridicule.
Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize:”I think the Leader of the Opposition is suffering from attention deficit disorder not just wants attention because he knows what is happening. We did not take it lightly. Actually it is his father being the Prime Minister then that required the Haitians to get a VISA into Belize contrary to the Treaty of Chaguaramas. I do not recall the now Leader of the Opposition back then calling out the UDP saying that you’re moving contrary to the Treaty of Chaguaramas. It was our government that said you know we need to implement the Treaty of Chaguaramas and to remove the VISA waiver. I think the Leader of the Opposition is just calling for attention for himself. I would have more respect for him he would have come to me and said well Prime Minister could you explain what is it that you’re trying to accomplish and we could have explained it to him but for him to just take out such a release obviously as I said he has an issue with attention deficit disorder.”
As we stated earlier, there is currently no visa requirement for Jamaican nationals as was alluded to by the opposition leader.
