With Belize being a long ways away from achieving herd immunity the government says they refuse to lockdown the country. Last week Prime Minister John Briceno threatened a possible lockdown of Belize City after numbers of COVID-19 cases in Belize City have increased dramatically. The number of active cases have already surpassed the one thousand mark, and again, Belize City has recorded the highest number of new cases. While a lockdown of the Belize District might be an easy solution, Prime Minister John Briceno says it won’t solve the problem.
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “I know a lot of people are worried if we’re going to have a lockdown, listen a lockdown will not solve the problem. A lockdown will only delay it. You know if we lockdown for two weeks or we lockdown for a month it will slow down the spread but as soon as we finish the lockdown and people start to take off their mask and drink and be reckless it’s going to spread. What we need to do wear your mask as best as you possibly can, don’t be reckless, don’t be out in the streets drinking and then when people are getting sick, social distance but the most important thing get vaccinated. Every person that has died from COVID it is because they were not vaccinated. Every person that’s in the hospital right now because of COVID is because they have not been vaccinated. What more do you want to know for you to get vaccinated. Nobody in Belize has gotten very sick or died because they got the vaccination. It is a safe vaccination and the only way we can get our country back on it’s feet is if we get vaccinated. The only we’re going to have a normal Christmas or close to normal is to get vaccinated.”
