Will President Donald Trump’s new policies, seen by many as radical, impact Belize? According to Prime Minister John Briceno he doesn’t think so. Since returning to office on Monday, Trump has moved to introduce several significant policy changes that would have global impacts. Trump’s executive orders range from extreme changes in immigration, climate change, as well as its relations with other countries. Additionally, Trump’s administration has emphasized an “America First” stance in foreign policy, including pausing US foreign development aid. PM Briceno weighed in on some of these orders and its impact on Belize.

John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “I think it’s unfortunate that President Trump is getting out of these international organizations. It’s of no surprise because he’s been saying this from during his campaign and as soon as he was elected, the WHO and the Paris Agreement are very important. The Paris Agreement on climate change, we are suffering climate change. We have to pay the price. So it’s unfortunate that they’ve done that. And the same thing with the WHO. If you want to look at it cynically, he’s only going to be there for four years. I’m hoping that after four years that they can come back and sign on to climate change and to work with the WHO.”
Trump is serving his second term in office.
