Prime Minister John Briceno received a video call on behalf of Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen yesterday. The call was made by the country’s Foreign Minister, Joseph Wu who congratulated Belize on its 40th anniversary of independence. During the call Minister Wu also thanked the Belize Government for its friendship throughout the years and expressed interest in continuing its working relations with the country. According to an online publication out of Taiwan, its government has pledged to maintain its efforts to help Belize combat the coronavirus, revive its economy and boost its national development. Prime Minister Briceno expressed gratitude to Taiwan and promises to visit the island when the Covid-19 pandemic subsides. Belize and Taiwan have shared bilateral relations since 1989 under the then PUP administration.
