PM Calls Chester Williams the Best ComPol in Modern Belizean History

Prime Minister John Briceno has labelled Commissioner of Police Chester Williams as the best ComPol in the country’s modern history. Williams is set to become CEO for the Ministry of Constitution and Religious Affairs, Indigenous Affairs, and Transportation. Last week, Williams was offered the job by Prime Minister Briceno and accepted. The government is now working to complete a comprehensive exit package for him and, according to Prime Minister Briceno, commence a tiered transition to the ministry. This morning, PM Briceno spoke about his decision and expressed confidence in Williams’s ability to handle the hefty ministry.

John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “There has to be a transition period. Now whether it’s going to be one month or two months we’re still trying to work that out and again I want to put on record my deep appreciation to Commissioner Williams for the extraordinary work that he did and I mean that sincerely. You know sometimes people just say things to say it but he has done an extraordinary job in policing. I think it’s been the most successful Commissioner of Police that we’ve had certainly in modern history but it’s time to move on and we need to be able to look at the issue of transport, the Ministry of Transport needs some serious attention on how we can modernize that department, look at now we have better roads so people are speeding more so we have to try to see how we could control that. Looking at the buses, looking at all of the things. So it’s quite a challenge.”

Reporter: Do you think he can handle the Indigenous portfolio ?
John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize:“Well I’m sure he will. I mean he has spent a lot of time in the Toledo district not only as a young police officer but even as commissioner whenever there are issues. I do think that if you can handle the police he can handle the indigenous affairs.”

Williams has served in the department for over three decades and holds a law degree.
