PM John Briceno Defends Hiring of Giovanni Brackett

Giovanni Brackett, he is a former grassroots activist who once led Citizens Organized for Liberty through Action (COLA). At the height of his activism, Brackett was a staple in the news but that changed when he stepped down as the President of COLA for personal reasons. He then left the country before the general elections in 2020. He returned to the country after the People’s United Party formed the government and for the past weeks, Brackett has been in the news not for his activism, but because of public criticism. This time, however, he is being criticized for entering into a contract with the Government as an information consultant in the Government Press Office. When we asked the Prime Minister about it today, he said that Brackett’s is needed at the Government Press Office.

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: ” After we got into government and he came in and we spoke with him and we believe that he can assist us in the press office to kind of change the mindset of the press office how is it that we can operate in a modern day of almost instant news.  And so he has been doing some work there but also he has been doing work with Minister Dolores Balderamos and also with Minister Musa and doing some social intervention and so we do believe that it was the right decision to be able to bring him to be able to help and do the work that we have in government.

Reporter: But was it needed ? Was hiring Giovannie Bracket needed ?

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “Well I believe that it was that is why we hired him.”

Reporter: I mean to help press office.

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “As I said it was.”

Reporter: Press office has Mike Rudon the director.

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “Yes he has Mike Rudon but we also felt that Giovannie brings a different skillset to be able to help us at the press office and basically as I said to be able to change the mindset that information comes in different ways. It comes in paper, it comes on video, it comes digitally, it comes from the internet and we were hoping that he can be able to help the press office to move in that direction that now media or the government press office is not just taking out videos with a minister is out there visiting an area or a press release but it is more than that and it is a lot of instant news that we have to be dealing with.”

Reporter: Do you believe the amount he’s paying paid is fair and worth it ?

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “Yes.”
