Earlier in the week, we told you about a petition with over 200 signatures calling for the replacement of Dangriga area representative, Frank “Pawpa” Mena. The signatures were those of town councilors as well as registered UDP voters. They listed several reasons for their discontent with Mena. This included there not being any membership meeting in the past five years; the residents not seeing Mena around in his constituency as well as feeling divided under his leadership; and the inactivity of the registration and transfer drive. While Mena has not made a comment on the issue, several of his colleagues have. The most recent includes comments made by the Prime Minister, Dean Barrow. Today, he stated that he believes Mena is the most suitable candidate to represent the people of the South.
Rt.Hon Dean Barrow, Prime Minister of Belize: “I happen to consider him a personal friend and I will say this; I have never seen any politician that is able to connect with people in quite the way that Papa Mena is able to. You see him on a rostrum when he’s switching between Garifuna and Kriol, you see him in a crowd with his Garifuna constituents the man is magic but that’s not necessarily all that is required to win an election. My money, Papa Mena would absolutely go clear in the election not withstanding the some amount of opposition as is evidence by what has happened. The truth is though and I don’t think I’m treading on the leader elect’s toes we’re still not quite certain what the position of the Honorable Mena is whether in fact he still intends to stand in the next elections. So I would leave it at that.”
We will continue to follow this story.
