Representatives of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are in Belize meeting with Government leaders. It’s not an Article Four Consultation but somewhat of a check-in to see how the country is rebounding after difficulties over the last two years. Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, John Briceño was upbeat about the reports he has received from those discussions with the organisation.
John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “The IMF is here right now again it’s not for the article 4, the article 4 is going to be in February of next year and from all accounts I’m being told that it’s going very well. The IMF is happy seeing the progress that Belize has done. These are some of the best meetings we’ve had in probably more than twenty years. They’re even asking us to work with them to do a paper on how we managed to re-negotiate or to pay off the superbond and come up with the blue bond. They want to use that as an example for other countries to use around the world.”
