PNP Candidate Wil Maheia says he has solution to Monkey River Erosion Crisis

Residents of Monkey River, Toledo District, have been battling with erosion for years to prevent their homes and beaches from disappearing. The coastal community has been severely impacted by erosion and the effects of climate change. The residents have embarked on numerous beach reclamation efforts but have only scratched the surface of the problem. Toledo East Candidate for the People’s National Party Wil Maheia believes he has a solution for the loss of land and called on the residents to support him in the upcoming by-elections.

Wil Maheia, People’s National Party Candidate: “It’s no rocket science. You know, you put an excavator there and you reclaim the beach and you stop the erosion. You put that, I mean you don’t even have to spend millions on a bridge. There’s a barge in PG right now that the Honorable Julius Espat brought, and again thanks to my leadership that barge is there. That barge was not in plan, part of the plan when they were building the bridge. It was me and teacher Anita who run for the PNP who raised concern about people from Forest Home,  Elridge and Hopeville that how will they get to PG town. They wanted them to go all the way around nine miles to get to town which is only half a mile away. You know, it was my leadership and teacher Anita’s leadership that brought that barge here. We spoke with the honorable Julius Espat and again it shows that we can work across party lines. But I plan to ask the honorable Julius Espat instead of taking the barge back to Belize City to bring it to Monkey River so vehicles can get over to the village and begin to develop that village. That’s one of the most beautifulest village in the country of Belize. Beaches like crazy. I mean, Chief, you know. You’ve been to these places and you know that Monkey River is a jewel and we need to save Monkey River and working with the Honorable Julius, we can do that. He’s a nice guy. He was one of the guys when he was in opposition motivated me. Hey, you got to keep on fighting and I’m fighting for the people of the Toledo East.”

Maheia previously ran under the Belize Progressive Party’s banner.
