Police Commissioner Aims to Address Rogue Officers in Northern Belize
As the Police and the BDF are working at curbing the violence up north, Police Commissioner is looking to weed out some rogue cops reportedly posted in the north. It is a similar situation the commissioner faced a while back where he had to reshuffle the officers at the Dangriga Police Station.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Just as we have heard before and we have dealt with Dangriga where one of the issues we had was that many of the officers in Dangriga were from Dangriga and were part of the problem there we’re getting the same from Corozal here the information is from the citizenry that most of the police officers there are from Corozal and some of them may be compromised and so we’re also looking at shifting some of our people in the north and replacing them with fresh blood with a view to ensure that we can secure the trust and confidence of the people moving forward. We are not sure that these officers are but the public does have that perception and if it is that the public believes that a certain officer is compromised then the public is not going to share information with that police officer and then that itself is going to ake us deficient in some respect. And again how do we secure the confidence? If the public is saying that xyz is compromised and they see that xyz is moved out and someone new is brought in that itself gives some breath of fresh air to the people knowing that there is some new person there that they can go and speak to.”
We will keep you posted on what the final decision is by the government.
