Police Commissioner Calls for Responsible Reporting from the Media
Police Commissioner Williams also spoke on the relationship with the media. He noted that he would like to see the news media digress from sensationalizing stories. Furthermore, he says that he does his best to utilize the media to report to the public on the affairs of the department and ongoing investigations.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Well the truth is the media plays a very important role in any democratic society and Belize is one such democratic society and we’re proud of that and again the public does have a right to information and particularly information that involves their security. The police department is tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that we do our part where citizen security is concerned and so having the media there to be able to put our information out to the public be it good or bad as much as the media would be more receptive to the bad information we must strike a balance in ensuring that there is also the good things that the police do that is made known to the public. And so as the Commissioner of Police I see it as a part of my duty, my responsibility to report back to the Belizean people in terms of what we’re doing, how we’re dealing with certain issues that involve their security and what better way to do it than the media ? So that is the spirit with which I administrate as the Commissioner of Police.”
