Police Commissioner Explains why PM’s Driver has not been charged

It’s been nine days since Prime Minister’s driver, Edwin Hill, knocked down and killed 3-year-old, Sherwin Leslie. The incident happened at around  7 pm on July 17. Leslie was knocked down while riding a bicycle near mile 24 on the Phillip Goldson Highway. According to police, Leslie had suddenly swerved into Hill’s path causing Hill to hit him. He was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital but died while receiving treatment. Since the incident, investigators were to put the file together and send it to the Director of Public Prosecution for her determination on what charges will be brought against Hill. However, today, Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, stated that based on police investigations Hill was not at fault and may not face any charges for the incident.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Based on the statements we have recorded from witnesses that it was not his fault and rather the cyclists swerving in his lane and he could not have avoided the accident due to oncoming traffic and you should know Mr. Vasquez in cases like these were it is revealed that the driver is not at fault then the driver is not charged the matter goes to coroner’s inquest.”

Reporter: That is untrue sir. that is untrue. I have to stop you. We know sir, everybody says the driver, the bicyclist swerved into my lane, the man was walking on the road, everybody says that and you proceed with charges and make them determine it at court thats standard sir. This is special treatment.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “I can give you several cases where persons who have been involved in accidents of this nature were not changed. Several and so it’s not surprising to me that you would come with that. At the end of the day you may have your agenda as to what you’re trying to push and try to make it seem as if there’s some degree of special treatment but that is not the case. We have had many many of these incidents and I challenge all the media houses to go and do the research and they are going to see and as I said before it’s not something the police is going to make the determination on. We are putting the file together, the fil will go to the DPP’s office and we’ll be guided by the instructions coming out of the DPP’s office.”

Commissioner Williams also stated that Leslie’s family would not be able to drop any charges brought against Hill, even if they are compensated.
