Police Commissioner Seeking Legal Action Against Opposition Leader’s Defamatory Statement

Police Commissioner Chester Williams is seeking legal advice reference a statement issued by the Leader of the Opposition, Moses Shyne Barrow.  Commissioner Williams has referred to the statement as defamatory, and has since forwarded the document to his attorney.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “I have referred the matter to my attorney and they are looking into it for defamation. For him to have come out and say that I issue gun license to criminals when in fact the gun license issued to the young man was not issued by me that is the defamatory in nature so that is with my attorney at this time. Following the shooting death of Kurt Usher in Libertad where it was said that a licensed firearm was found on him on his body and then the Leader of the Opposition went on to state that it goes to show that the commissioner is issuing gun licenses to suspected criminals and he alluded to the fact that usher was charged for unlicensed firearm in June or July last year. So he used that now, he saw an opportunity and he flung up as he normally does like chicken without a head and issued a press release that the commissioner is issuing gun licenses to potential criminals. But what he failed to understand is that the gun license of the young man had it was issued under the UDP administration by the previous commissioner not by me. So because he hears that the young man’s license he flung up and says me but he says that I issued to suspected criminals the commissioner gave him one gave a license to a criminal because by law he was convicted in the US for a crime. So he is a criminal and he got one so why do you now jump up to say that issue to a suspected criminal? Is it not best to issue to a suspected criminal than a real criminal? We have to be careful of what we say and he has become this person who like he just sits and wait for something bad to happen and tries to seize the moment playing on the lives of people.”

Police Commissioner Williams went on to speak on the recent slew of statements and press releases recently being sent from the opposition leader.  He stated that Opposition Leader, Shyne Barrow, is criticizing without logic.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “He spoke about the whole issue of the program that we have implemented dealing with these young men on the streets trying to find employment for them to be productive in the respective areas as promoting gangs. Now how could you ? This is the same man that have said that because he is a convict and has reformed he was given an opportunity to run for politics in Belize and elected. Now you having had that background you should be one of the main persons to support what we’re doing now because the opportunity given to you to reform why don’t you want us to give that to these young men to reform as well ? If we sit and continue to refer to them as gang members and keep them suppressed or oppressed how are we going to get them out of the lifestyle that they’re living. So instead of trying to criticize what we’re doing he should be comending what we’re doing. I can tell you under the previous administration Mr.Barrow tried this and while Mr.Barrow had good intentions he never had the support of the ministers to make sure it worked the way it is working now. So we a minister now Mr.Musa who is committed and he is doing all he can to make sure it worked and so anybody who wants to criticize what is being done it’s shame on them.”

The statement by the Leader of the Opposition was aired on several local news media, primarily on social media.
