Police Constable Caught with Undocumented Salvadorans

Eight Salvadoran nationals were detained in Santa Elena over the weekend for illegally entering Belize. Police there were conducting patrol when they came across a heavily tinted black SUV with no license plates. According to San Ignacio Commanding Officer, Superintendent Richard Rosado, the SUV was travelling towards La Loma Luz Boulevard when officers pulled it over. Driving the SUV at the time was 23-year-old Edif Sierra, a police constable attached to Benque Viejo del Carmen Police.


“On Saturday December 11, 2016 about nine fifteen pm, police a team of volunteers of Special Constables were conducting anti crime patrol within the Santa Elena Town Area and upon reaching the Ministry of Works compound on the George Price Highway the police attention was drawn to a black in color heavily tinted SUV bearing no license plates that overtook the patrol mobile. The said vehicle was travelling in the direction towards Belmopan and was subsequently pursued and intercepted. Police subsequently approached the said vehicle and noticed that there were eight persons in the vehicle with the driver. The license of the driver was requested. It was learned that he was a police constable attached to the Benque Viejo Police Formation. The occupants of the vehicle were later learnt to be Salvadorans and had no form of travel documents with them. Statements have been recorded and a joint investigation launched by the Human Services, Immigration and Police Departments.”

The eight Salvadorans were all escorted to the San Ignacio Police Station where their luggage and the vehicle were searched. Police found more than two thousand US dollars.
