Police Crack Down on the Issuing of Liquor License Extensions

The Belize Police Department is cracking down on liquor license extensions. The relaxation of the COVID-19 protocols has led to a boom in the return of nightclubs and bars, many of which operate late at night. However, according to Police Commissioner Chester Williams, many of those establishments don’t fit the criteria to either hold a nightclub license or liquor license extension. Williams says this prompted him to meet with the Belize City Council to discuss the issue.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “We are seeing that places that were given extension unknown to the police and the law is clear that in order for you to have a nightclub license the place must be soundproof. And if it is that you are going to have any outdoor event where noise or music will be played the place – it should not be and so we had a very cordial discussion about it and moving forward the chairman expressed that he is going to ensure that the police is in the loop when these licenses and extensions are issued so that we can be on the same page.”
