Police Detain One Man For Sexual Assault

Police have detained one person believed to be connected to a case of sexual assault in Southern Belize. A 45-year-old woman from Bella Vista Village, Toledo reported a sexual assault that occurred on February 15. The victim told police that she was sleeping when suddenly she was awoken by a male suspect, who had unlawfully entered her apartment, and was on top of her. The woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police Press Officer, ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, says police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.

ASP. Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations, Belize Police Department: “Where 45 year old lady was in her apartment in Bella Vista Village when she was awakened by someone who was on top of her. She managed to – well after a few minutes this person got off her and made good his escape with her cellphone, an amount of money in various denominations and he made good his escape. I know that her bicycle was also stolen but police investigation so far has led to the detention of one person and hopefully we will be bringing charges against that person in the not too far future. She was violated sexually because that person of course it was not consensual sex so we should have more information about that.”
