Eighteen-year-old Belmopan resident, Leroy Cus was a young and budding graphic designer who every day travelled to Belize City for work. The last time he did so was on Wednesday when he caught a bus to the Belmopan bus terminal and began making his way home. But he never got home because he was stabbed to death. Tonight, we can report that investigators have recovered what they believe is the murder weapon, a knife. Police in Belmopan have also detained one person who is being treated as a suspect. That suspect is believed to be part of a gang of young men who would hang around the area. Police Commissioner Chester Williams shared details.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “There is also a group of young men who hang out in a particular area along that walkway that we need find a way to discourage them from hanging out in that area because we believe that they had something to do with that young man’s death. The investigation is going. We are hoping that we will get some leads very shortly. We detained one person last night. We recovered a knife which we believe is the murder weapon but there are certain things that we must do. The knife will be checked by forensics to see if there was blood on it. If there is blood, whenever we have the post mortem of the young man Cus, they’re going to extract blood samples and we will send the knife and the blood sample for DNA testing to ascertain if in fact blood is on the knife that the blood is that of Mr. Cus but we certainly sympathise or empathise with the family of the young man. I read the story on social media. It’s heartbreaking. Whenever we see a young life being lost the way his was taken away we all have to be sad and heartbroken and as a department we will do what we can to try and find those who are responsible.”

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Well at this time we don’t know but we believe that they might have something to do with it.”Cus worked at Brodies in Belize City. The company this morning said (quote) “while Leroy had only been employed at Brodies for a short time his presence was impactful. Leroy was a hard-working young man, dedicated to fulfilling his goals and creating a better life for himself and his family. He was a good person with a bright future, whose life was taken too soon. We here at Brodies will miss his bright smile, calm demeanour, and beautiful personality. “ (End of quote)
