Police Investigate After Woman’s Bank Account Drained by Thief

Police are investigating a case of card theft after a Belize City woman reported that hundreds of dollars were withdrawn from her account without her knowledge. Twenty-seven-year-old Axia Sanchez reported to the Crimes Investigation Branch Precinct that she discovered discrepancies in her account last Wednesday, May 28. Sanchez told police that while she was taking screenshots of her account that morning, she noticed her balance rapidly decreasing. Her account showed a balance of only $325.56, which she knew was incorrect, because her last legitimate transaction was on Tuesday, May 27, at Ming Ai Supermarket in the Lake Independence area. After which, she secured her card and identification in her purse. Upon contacting Belize Bank, Sanchez was informed that over $377 in transactions had been made using her card, and her balance had been reduced to just $3.00. It was then that she realized her entire purse, containing her Belize Bank card and identification, was missing. Police have since detained a man from the Lake Independence area of Belize City in connection with the investigation.
