57-year-old Orville Neal was shot by police yesterday afternoon after police pursued him in connection with a crime. Just after 12:30, Neal was hiding in an abandoned building on Cottonwick Street in Belize City as police was following a report that he had been involved in a burglary. When police approached Neal, authorities say he pulled a knife and advanced towards the arresting officer. The officer responded and shot Neal to the left calf. He was taken to the KHMH for treatment and was admitted in a stable condition.
Also this week, police started investigations into a number of sex crimes. A 14-year-old girl reported to police that sometime in 2020, her grandfather had raped her at his house in rural Corozal District. The child’s grandfather is still wanted in this case. Another teenage girl from San Pedro reported to police that when she was a child, she had been touched in appropriately by a relative and raped twice in 2015. The girl, now 13, says that the incident happened in 2015, making her about six years old around that time. The victim says that her uncle committed the heinous acts. In Cayo District, a three-year-old boy was also raped in Belmopan.
Police are also investigating a robbery that happened on Wednesday night in Belize City. Dollar van operator, Samuel Guery reported that he was working in the Holy Emmanuel Street area when a man dashed across the road, forcing him to stop. The man approached Guery with a gun. The 43-year-old says that fearing for his life, he handed the armed robber his bag, which contained some cash. Guery says at the time of the incident his wife was in the backseat. No arrests have been made and police have not yet recovered the stolen money but promise an investigation.
