Police Make Arrests in Christmas Weekend Murders, Seek Public Assistance in Unsolved Case

Three men were murdered in separate incidents over the Christmas weekend, and police have been making strides in solving those cases. Arrests have been made regarding the murder of 30-year-old Kaleem Chun in Punta Gorda as well as the murder of 30-year-old Darnell Puerto in Belize City, but police are still looking into the murder of 18-year-old Chris Ramos. On Wednesday, Ramos’s body was found in the Belize River, floating in a barrel near Sarstoon Street. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says that no suspects have been identified thus far, and he is asking for the public’s assistance with the investigation. Williams says that police are not expecting retaliation for any of the three murders, but police remain on the alert.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “We don’t have any major gangs per say in Seine Bight that we would anticipate would want to come and retaliate and he was more like his mother described a mischief maker as opposed to a gang figure so no. In terms of the PG murder again that was a case with three friends, they were hanging out together and I don’t know what went wrong but suddenly one just took out a gun and shot the other one. Again for that we don’t anticipate any sort of retaliation. And the one in respect to the Maskall Street murder again we don’t expect retaliation for that. I think the police did a good job in investigating and finding the person who is responsible and that person is now before the court. So even though we don’t anticipate retaliation we will still ensure that we maintain our presence and do as much as we can to prevent any retaliation should there be any intent to do so. We don’t know if the person or persons who were in that van were the same ones that he went and met when he went on the bicycle. Nonetheless though we have not been able to establish who was or were in that van that he was seen in prior to his disappearance. We are hoping that people in the area would be able to provide information to the police. I know the police are canvassing the area to gather information looking for surveillance cameras that may be able to assist and see what information can be gathered to further the investigation.”

Twenty-year-old Lazaro Barrientos and twenty-three-year-old Louis Barillas have been arrested and charged with Chun’s murder, while 28-year-old Shaquille Perrera has been charged with Puerto’s murder.
