Police Meet with the Mothers of the Southside

The police formation of the Belize District continues with their efforts to prevent youth from falling into criminal life. Today, fifty mothers from the south side area of Belize City gathered to discuss how they can divert their children from gang violence and exercise their authority in their homes to keep them off the streets. Love News spoke with Assistant Commissioner of Police, Howell Gillett, who explained how they are best addressing the crime issue that is plaguing the community.

The mothers who participated in the discussion, gathered at the Samuel Haynes Institute to try to figure out what the root of the problem is and trying to come up with solutions. In an interview with one of the mothers, Shaun Godoy, she explained that one of the main problems is the lack of employment.

Godoy said that the mothers of the community are looking towards starting a small farm and creating jobs for themselves in areas like sewing, hairdressing and selling food.
