The Belize Police Department has not responded to a report of a drug plane landing since July 31, 2022. At that time, the suspected narco jet was found in an area near Crique Sarco Village in Toledo. Since then, it appears that international underworld figures have rethought their strategy and landed these planes in other parts of Central America. Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa was asked about it today, and according to him, Belize gets information about planes landing in the region almost every night.
Hon. Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries: “If I were to give an interview every time a plane comes into our region it would be every single day. Every night our police officers, our operations team receives intelligence, information that illicit aircrafts have left South America coming to our region. We spread out all across this country to the known points, we have a good radar system, we do have joint cooperation with other countries in the region who provide us with intelligence and information and that I would say is the number one reason we’ve been able to deter those aircrafts from landing in Belize. Right now it seems that the preferred landing spot for them is in Guatemala. I believe on landed there last week but was apprehended and I believe one may have landed if not last night the night before and so we see a general trend whereby yes they’re coming into our region but they’re going across Belize and landing in Guatemala. We continue with our efforts to deter these aircrafts from landing in Belize. Like I said it’s almost every single night that our officers are deployed to deal with this.”
