A police officer has been arrested and charged for kidnapping. The incident occurred 27 days ago. Reports had come to our newsroom about a week ago but investigators are only briefing the media on the incident today. Senior Superintendent Hilberto Romero spoke on the case during this morning’s media brief.
Senior Supt. Hilberto Romero, Deputy Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch: “Sutherland hand cuffed her to the bed and thereafter assaulted her. She managed to free herself at some point and reported the matter and was assisted by neighbors. As a result of this investigation PC Dwayne Sutherland has been arrested and charged for the crime of kidnapping. She reported that she had also been assaulted by this police officer on two different occasions in the past. Advice was sought from the DPP and a file was sent and the directive came to charge him with kidnapping. At this time the other investigations are ongoing and other charges may follow. Again the reports had been made and they were investigated and that is what led to this arrest.”
Police Constable Dwayne Sutherland is now on interdiction from the Belize Police Department. He was attached to the Punta Gorda Police Station and was taken to court last week in Independence Village.
