Police Officer Charged with Rape After Coercing Woman for Release from Custody

Tonight, a police officer is behind bars after he allegedly coerced a woman into having sex for her release from the Queen Street Police Station. On Friday, 45-year-old police constable Derwin Marin was on duty at the precinct’s cell block when the incident occurred. Investigators say that Marin solicited sexual favors for a woman who was detained pending charges of crack pipe possession and assault. Marin reportedly took the woman out of the holding cell, to an area in the station where he forced her to perform sexual acts. The incident was dealt with swiftly and by Saturday Marin was charged. This morning, he was arranged on a single charge of rape in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where Police Commissioner Chester Williams personally prosecuted the matter and pushed for Marin’s remand.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Basically I appeared in court this morning to do the arraignment for the police officer who is charged with the crime of rape which took place at the Queen Street Police Station over the weekend. I came to object to bail because we believe that the act is such that the police officer needs to remain in prison until the matter is heard. Well I guess we need to show the importance of the case. Like I said before we have been doing our best to ensure that we rid ourselves of those rogue officers who constantly do things that embarasses the department and my presence here is a strong statement that we are doing what we can to ensure that persons who are aggrieved by the actions of police that they get justice.”

Reporter: The department said they carried out a swift investigation, can you walk us through what that investigation entailed?

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “I’m not going to go into details of the investigation as it is a matter before the court and we’re not here to try the matter but certainly the person who is the victim was a prisoner in police custody, the investigation revealed that the police officer solicit sex from her in exchange for her release. He subsequently took her outside of her cell block where the act did take place. We have secured several statements as well as video footage that supports her allegation. Every police officer who works at the cell block area knows that cameras are there. Well the camera would not have captured the act itself but the camera did pick up when he took her out of the cell and took her to the area where the alleged rape too placed.”

Williams went on to say that based on the evidence he has received, he doesn’t believe it was the first time Marin committed such a vile act. He is now appealing to anyone who may have been wronged by Marin or anyone other cop to come forward.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “She was forthcoming and we are very much appreciative of that. This is what we want. That whenever we do have these allegations that people can feel free to come forward so that we can address it. Oftentimes we hear people say the police this the police that but they’re never willing to come forward to give statements. To see that she was brave enough to do so we are grateful. The way how the young lady, the victim, described what took place it makes me wonder. I was sitting there reading the statements and I am blown away by the content of the statement. It makes me wonder if he has not done this before. It seems to be a tendency of his and I don’t know like I said if he had done it before to anybody and they did not report the matter but the statement speaks volumes to me.”

Reporter: So then you’re calling on anyone as you mentioned in your statement if they want to come forward they can and should ?

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Certainly if there is anyone out there who has been aggrieved by him or any other police officer in such a way then they can feel free to come forward and make their complaint.”

PC Marin has been placed on interdiction and is due back in court on August 17, 2024.
