Police Officer Detained Following Accident Involving Former Punta Gorda Mayor

A police officer has been detained in connection with a road traffic incident in southern Belize this morning. The incident happened on the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway near Santa Cruz village. Our newsroom understands that a Nissan Rogue headed to Belize City collided with a Toyota Hilux, driven at the time by the officer. One of the passengers in the Rogue, Former Punta Gorda town Mayor Anthony Fuentez, says that the Hilux made the turn without indicating leading to extensive damage to the Rogue and injuring the driver. 

We understand that the officer is detained at the Independence Polie Station, pending charges.
