Police officers receive training in communication

Twenty officers from the Eastern Division graduated from a four-week training in Effective Speaking and Writing for Modern Day Policing which was facilitated by the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU). Love News spoke with Senior Superintendent Howell Gillett, Commander of Eastern Division Region One about the initiative.

Sr. Superintendent Howell Gillett – Commander of Eastern Division, Region One: “Most if not all of these officers are now able to speak with the media, they are able to write better reports and that will transcend into even greater things because they will be able to write better reports to go to the courts and that in itself will improve the conviction rate as a result of what the officers have learned. We can’t put a cost to this because it is very intensive and hearing from the officers during the session a while ago could tell you that they are now they are completely changed from how they were when they came some four weeks ago so it’s a four week session. We are very hopeful that Commanders in other parts of the countries see it necessary to have their officer’s train. As a matter of fact I don’t even think we have to go that far because the Commissioner was here a while ago and he said that he will make a standard that we train officers in report writing, in presentation and how to deal with the media.”

Love News also spoke with the facilitator Ruth Shoman, the National Secretary of the BNTU who said that the training was the start of something that should continue.
