The 3-day weekend saw seven incidents in various districts that claimed the life of eight persons. On Friday night just before eleven o’clock there was a road traffic incident in the area of Mount Hope in Unitedville Village, Cayo District that claimed the life of 37-year-old, Alfonso Albert Mendoza. Investigations show that Mendoza was riding his bicycle on the George Price Highway and upon reaching the Mount Hope Church, he was knocked down from behind by a white motor vehicle heading west. Mendez was pronounced dead on arrival at the San Ignacio Community Hospital as he bore injuries to his head and body. Found at the scene of the incident was the victim’s beach cruiser bicycle. 54-year-old Roland Garcia and 20-year-old Donovan Mendoza both of Unitedville were detained pending investigations. Within an hour of Mendoza being killed on the George Price Highway, authorities in Orange Walk were called out to the August Pine Ridge Road just before midnight where they saw the body of 25-year-old, Abraham Diaz between miles 18 and 19. According to police when they arrived at the scene, they found an extensively damaged motorcycle and a black Ford F2000 pickup truck off the road. When the investigators returned at the scene, they also found the body of 34-year-old Antonio Solis of August Pine Ridge bearing head and body injuries. Initial Investigations revealed that 42-year-old, Martin Ramos of San Felipe Village was travelling from August Pine Ridge towards San Felipe and upon reaching the area, he collided into the motorcycle that was being driven by Diaz and was also carrying Solis. The bodies were transported to the Northern Regional Hospital Morgue, where they were pronounced dead on arrival at 3:35 a.m. Police have since detained, Martin Ramos pending charges. The first homicide for the weekend is being investigated by San Ignacio Police. According to reports, it was just before six o’clock on Saturday morning when the authorities visited a bus stop at the corner of Joseph Andrews Drive and Benque Road in San Ignacio Town where they saw Benjamin Gomez with multiple stab wounds to the neck. The body was taken to the Western Regional Hospital where Gomez was pronounced dead on arrival. Police are now awaiting a post mortem examination to be conducted to further their investigations. The second murder took place in the Toledo District on Sunday morning at around six o’clock. Police responded to a residence in Bella Vista Village where they found 21-year-old, Edilsar Abimael Mendez, a Guatemalan laborer. Mendez’ body was found with injuries to his face and cut wounds to the throat. So far, one person has been detained for questioning into this incident. Authorities in Belmopan are looking into the murder of 23-year-old, Ashly Justin Clark of a Lime Street address in that municipality. Police went to the crime scene behind a motel on Constitution Drive where they found Clarke in a pool of water in an advance state of decomposition. His body was found with a wound to the back of the head and so far police have found that on Sunday just after midday, family members were the ones who found Clarke’s body after being in search of him since Friday, October 7 as he had not been home since. He was last seen socializing at a night club on Friday night at around eleven thirty. A post mortem examination has revealed that Clarke died of blunt force traumatic injuries to the head. One man has been detained for questioning. The seventh life lost over the weekend is that of a young man from Belmopan. Fem Cruz has the story.
