Police Recruitment Milestone: UN Gender Inclusion Standards Surpassed

The Police Department made history today in several areas including the total number of recruits to have graduated at any one time.  Another feather in the department’s cap is the surpassing of the UN’s international 20% standards on women inclusion.  Love News understands that of the 231 recruits that passed out today, 57 are women, an equivalent of 25 percent.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs: Squad 97 has proven to be a squad of first with an unprecedented fifty seven of its trainees being women. This constitutes nearly 25% of the squad surpassing the United Nations standards of just 20%. This is a testament to our whole of ministry approach to gender responsive citizen security that is aware of and working to combat any semblance of discriminatory practices in recruitment standards and procedures and overall gender stereotyping and patriarchal attitudes and definitions of policing management. It is our hope that with steps such as these we are planting the seeds of some day, sooner rather than later, having our first woman Commissioner of Police.”

According to the United Nations, one of its top priorities in global law-enforcement is to increase the number of female police officers in peacekeeping operations and encourage the recruitment of women in domestic police services.
