The death of 86-year-old, Gudelia Estevez, who died twelve days after she was hit by a vehicle, may result in additional charges for the driver of the vehicle, 49-year-old Martin Franklin Reyes. Wilfredo Ferrufino of the Crimes Investigation Branch says the investigation has shifted with the passing of Estevez.
Inspector Wilfredo Ferrufino CIB, Belize City: “They will be awaiting the result of the post mortem and they will then forward the file to the DPP for her to make her conclusion on what charges to take.”
Reporter: “So do you all believe that you will be levying charges against the driver?”
Inspector WIlfredo Ferrufino CIB, Belize City: “Well initially there would have been charges however there may be additional charges now depending on the outcome of the post mortem and whatever the DPP directs.”
Estevez and her 8-year-old, grandson, Nikolai Tun, were knocked down as she was taking him to St. Ignatius Primary School just after eight o’clock on the morning of February 22. It happened when they were crossing the road at the corner of Dean Street and Amara Avenue. She sustained serious injuries which confined her to a bed. Her daughter, Sonia Tun told us her passing was unexpected. Nikolai Tun was severely traumatized by the incident. Estevez will be laid to rest in Benque Viejo Del Carmen, Cayo District.
