Police Under Fire: Controversial Video Emerges of Officers Ridiculing Mentally Ill Man
A video recording has spilled onto social media, showing a mentally ill man being instructed by police officers to take off his shirts. In the two-minute-twenty-three-second video, the man wore at least six shirts along with a bra. As he took off his shirts, he was being questioned by Police, and ridiculed because of the bra he was wearing. One female officer was heard in the background, asking the detainee if he longs to be a female. She further asked the man if he puts sponge inside the bra for his ‘boy to feel’. Up to midday today, both the Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa and Deputy Commissioner Jones were yet to see the video.
Reporter: There is a video that’s circulating where officers are videoing this person who allegedly has mental issues taking off shirts, I don’t know if you’ve seen the video but is there anything that you guys can do? Will there be repercussions for the officers for taking advantage of this person ?
Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries: “No I have not seen the video. Where did it take place ? In a police station ? Alright I’ll have to review the footage to see what actions can be taken.”
Bartholomew Jones, Deputy Commissioner of Police: “I haven ot seen the video myself but once these things happen we do in fact look into them and deal with the officers accordingly. One of the things apart from arms control the department has been doing is promoting human rights within policing and so we’re grounding our policing on human rights principles and part of the training is just that not in any way discriminate or humiliate or in any way illtreat any person especially those of vulnerable groups. So certainly that goes against our principles and our code of conduct and once they are found culpable they’ll be deal with accordingly.”
The Belize Police Association has issued a release on the leaked video. The association notes in a social media post, that they are against the actions of those selfish police officers in the video. The release went on to apologize the man, on behalf of the police department.
