Police working to curb crime

Police say that officially for the month of August there have been as many as seven murders and these have taken place primarily in South Side Belize City. And while the media has called this an increase in gun violence, the police department has not readily accepted this. Today, the media spoke with Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs Elodio Aragon Jr. who says they are working towards curbing this trend.

Elodio Aragon Jr – Minister of Home Affairs

“We are working on that. It is a task force we are putting together, it is not about intelligence in terms of the task force. The Special Branch arm of the Department is basically our intelligence gathering section. When it comes to the task force that is to focus investigation on certain individuals that we know are out there committing crime or masterminding crime.  That task force we need to make sure we get the right people to that task force, we have to make sure we have the proper resources, all of that is being put together, it has to be a well thought out plan.  Furthermore we have to have legislation, the kind of support for them to be effective. We have the anti-gang legislation that has been drafted but it has to go through a process.”
