A police officer attached to the Belmopan Police Station is hospitalized after he was beaten yesterday evening by a gang of young boys at a bar in Camalote Village, Cayo District. Mark Rodriguez had just gotten off duty and was heading home to San Ignacio when he made a stop at the Outback Ranch establishment to meet the owner pertaining to a case. Love News spoke with Rodriguez’s common-law-wife of fourteen years, Krista Zelaya on his prognosis and what transpired yesterday.
“At about 6:40am the police called to tell me that Mark was in a serious accident. I turned back and went back, he is in there and is stable. For right now everything is okay but apart from that they are leaving things in God’s hands.”
“What did he tell you happened?”
“All he knows is that he went to talk to the lady at the bar because she has a case dealing with her and she called him to check on a case and that was it. Two young men were smoking weed and they were accusing him that maybe he called the police on them and by the time he turned around they hit him with a chair and they beat him up. They stabbed him up that is what caused all the injuries and he suffered a broken mandible.”
As it pertains to a motive, Zelaya relayed to us what was explained to her by persons who were at the establishment at the time.
“No I said maybe it pertained to his job because he was in his uniform that they caught him. They are accusing him that he is the one that called the police because they were smoking weed but aside from that. When I got to the police station to get his belongings the police told me that at 6:13 they called saying they needed assistance because a police officer was being beaten up. They probably thought that he texted for them but he texted me I have the text too. I don’t know what to say, it’s just taking advantage of people. You don’t hit someone in their head and leave them there and leave them unconscious. You can’t do that to people.”
“What are the doctors saying ?”
“They are waiting for him to get a CATSCAN, besides that they are just observing.”
Police have detained two young men in connection with Rodriguez’s assault; they will be taken to court tomorrow. Meanwhile, one police officer, Nolberto Segura lost his life over the weekend following a medical condition. Segura’s death came on the heels of the burial of police officer, Jerry Usher who was laid to rest on Saturday in Punta Gorda, Toledo District.
